Membership FAQ & Requirements
Q: How much does it cost to join the Wilkes Flying Club?
A: There is a one-time joining fee of $150 and annual dues of $500, pro-rated based on your join date.
Q: What is the hourly rental rate for the aircraft?
A: Our Piper Cherokee PA-28-180 rents for $125 per hour (wet) — fuel included.
Q: Are flight instructors available through the club?
A: Yes. There are independent certified flight instructors (CFIs) available to members. Instruction is billed separately by the instructor and not managed by the club.
Q: Is the Wilkes Flying Club a flight school?
A: No. We are not a Part 61 or Part 141 flight school. We are a private, member-run flying club that owns and maintains the aircraft. Members may train with independent CFIs associated with the club.
Q: Do I need a medical certificate to join?
A: Yes. A valid 3rd Class Medical Certificate is required to become a member.
Q: I'm already a certificated pilot. Can I fly the club airplane right away?
A: No. All pilots must complete a checkout and be signed off by a club-approved CFI before flying club aircraft. This is required by our insurance provider.
Q: What if I haven’t flown the club airplane in a while?
A: If you haven’t flown the aircraft in the last 90 days, you must complete a refresher checkout with a club-approved CFI before flying again. This is a requirement of our AVEMCO insurance policy.
Q: Is there a minimum age to join?
A: Yes. You must meet FAA requirements: 16 to solo, 17 to obtain a Private Pilot Certificate. Parental consent is required for applicants under 18.
Q: Do I have to be a U.S. citizen?
A: Non-U.S. citizens must complete TSA vetting before beginning any flight training, per federal regulations.
Q: How do I apply?
A: You can download the application form from our website here. After submitting your application per the instructions on the application, it will be reviewed and voted on by the Wilkes Flying Club board, which meets once a month - typically during the first or second week. You will be notified shortly after the vote with the results.
